Molding Fundamentals, The Importance of Mold Temperature Control

General News
Importance of Injection Mold Temperature Control

Manufacturers often overlook measuring the actual steel temperature inside the mold cavity, focusing instead on chiller or unit settings. Yet, the temperature the polymer experiences during mold filling and solidification directly impacts surface finish, dimensional stability, and mechanical performance. Treating mold temperature as a minimally important parameter can lead to defects such as shading, warpage, or premature part failure.

At Total Plastic Solutions (TPS), we recognize actual mold temperature control as a critical factor. Beyond setting tempering units to supplier recommendations, we verify cavity temperatures to ensure process stability and part quality.

Understanding Material Requirements

Each polymer has a recommended molding temperature range. Heavier molecular weight resins generally require higher mold temperatures to ensure proper flow and stress relaxation.

  • Operating at the lower end of the range may shorten cycle time but increases the risk of frozen stresses, cracking, or premature failure.
  • Higher temperatures allow stress relaxation, which is essential for demanding applications.

Amorphous polymers soften gradually with temperature increase, while crystalline polymers maintain their solid state until a certain amount of heat is absorbed, then transition to a low viscosity liquid. This sharp melting point is a significant factor in the molding process.

Managing Heat Transfer

Cooling design often differs between mold halves. The fixed side usually benefits from better heat removal, while the moving side may be restricted by ejector mechanisms or geometry. Uneven cooling creates asymmetry, leading to delayed solidification, higher crystallinity, and greater shrinkage in semi-crystalline polymers.

To correct this, multiple temperature control circuits may be used. Circuits with limited cooling area can run at lower media temperatures, while those with larger surface area may run hotter to balance heat transfer across the mold.

Monitoring Flow and Stability

Accurate mold temperature control requires monitoring both water temperature and flow rate. A key measure is the temperature difference between water entering and exiting the mold, which should not exceed 3–5°C to maintain dimensional stability.

Flow conditions must also ensure turbulence within the cooling channels. This is measured by Reynolds number, ideally between 4,000–8,000. Understanding the viscosity of the cooling fluid is critical for this calculation. Turbulent flow prevents the mold wall temperature from fluctuating significantly, even when central cooling system variations occur.

Conclusion

Mold temperature is not just another process setting—it is central to producing high-quality, reliable parts. By carefully measuring cavity temperature, understanding material-specific requirements, balancing cooling circuits, and ensuring turbulent flow, manufacturers can reduce defects, extend tool life, and deliver consistent results. At Total Plastic Solutions, we prioritize these practices to achieve both process stability and customer satisfaction.
